Do you want to cook for a living? This industry is not for the faint of heart. The hours are long, and being a good chef is sometimes not all it takes to be successful. Some chefs work diligently for years only to be passed up for promotion by restaurant management. There have been instances where restaurant management won’t interview a chef simply because he hasn’t trained at the right school, or worked in the right circles.

This is why many are starting to avoid the restaurant business altogether, and work for a different type of management: themselves.

Being a Personal Chef

One way to make a living from your chef education and practice the culinary art you love without dealing with restaurant management or the entire restaurant industry is to become a personal chef. More and more personal chefs make a living by working for small groups of families or individual families. They use their chef educations to plan weekly menus incorporating the nutritional needs and personal tastes of their clients, and then set up delivery systems that ensure quality and freshness on the dinner table. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Personal chefs earn on average over $9 an hour, but many receive additional perks like housing and meals for free.

Most aspiring personal chefs start out in the catering business. They use their chef educations to build good reputations around a community. A chef education can only go so far, however. If you’re interested in being a personal chef, you can use the reputation you create to build a delicious career working for families.
